Reading 1 Sir 35:1-12 To keep the law is a great oblation, and he who observes the commandments sacrifices a peace offering. In works of charity one offers fine flour, and when he gives alms he presents his sacrifice of praise. To refrain from evil pleases the LORD,and to avoid injustice is an atonement.Appear not before the LORD empty-handed,for all that you offer is in fulfillment of the precepts. The just one's offering enriches the altarand rises as a sweet odor before the Most High. The just one's sacrifice is most pleasing, nor will it ever be forgotten. In a generous spirit pay homage to the LORD,be not sparing of freewill gifts. With each contribution show a cheerful countenance, and pay your tithes in a spirit of joy.Give to the Most High as he has given to you, generously, according to your means. For the LORD is one who always repays, and he will give back to you sevenfold. But offer no bribes, these he does not accept!Trust not in sacrifice of the fruits of extortion. For he is a God of justice, who knows no favorites. Responsorial Psalm Ps 50:5-6, 7-8, 14 and 23 R. (23b) To the upright I will show the saving power of God."Gather my faithful ones before me,those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice."And the heavens proclaim his justice;for God himself is the judge.R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God."Hear, my people, and I will speak;Israel, I will testify against you;God, your God, am I.Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you,for your burnt offerings are before me always."R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God."Offer to God praise as your sacrificeand fulfill your vows to the Most High.He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me;and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God."R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God. Alleluia see mt 11:25 R. Alleluia, alleluia.Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mk 10:28-31 Peter began to say to Jesus,'We have given up everything and followed you."Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sistersor mother or father or children or landsfor my sake and for the sake of the Gospelwho will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:houses and brothers and sistersand mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first." - - -Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States, second typical edition, Copyright © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; Psalm refrain © 1968, 1981, 1997, International Committee on English in the Liturgy, Inc. Wilderness: Talk 3 – Stop Complaining, Start Celebrating

2023-05-28T16:50:38+08:00

TalkDIDOY LUBATON: STOP Complaining. Start Celebrating. Let me say that again: Stop Complaining. Start Celebrating. We are in the series of Wilderness, we’re discussing from the book of Numbers. And from Numbers 11, moving forward, you’ll see about their next steps back into the wilderness, going into the Promised Land (Canaan). So, three days only after leaving Mount Sinai where God performed miracles, where God showed them again great things, three days, they got out.The Complaining StartsHere’s the passage from Numbers 11: 1, 4-6:This is not the first time that they complained. Manna has been with them ever since they got out of Egypt. And you know, they’re like in a Grumblers Association. Yes, they need to be in Grumblers Anonymous. So, it has become their national pastime. Complaining is very contagious because, to be fair, if you read it, it didn’t start with the Israelites. It started with the foreign rabble who were travelling with them. Who were they? They were Egyptians who went for the ride with them. It started with people who were not within them. An unbeliever. Different culture. What happened? The foreign rabble started complaining. And then the Israelites were like, “Yeah, that’s true…”Here’s the lesson, my dear friends: Be careful with the conversations you join.Be careful with the conversations with the chat groups that you join with the Facebook, with the Viber Groups, your officemates, or people at the street corner… You be careful with the company that you choose, their values. You know, even the Media conversations that you consume. We’re more malleable and impressionable than we think we are.My dear friends, sometimes, really, complaining is not going to be helpful for you. Test it:Today is 9:26 a.m. How many times did you already complain-- in your mind?Think about it…The moment you woke up: Haaay, it’s so hot…Haaay, even I am now in Aliw Theater, it’s still hot… No parking… Actually, there is parking, but quite far from here. You know, complaining is contagious.I need to say a bit more about this because it’s not all complaining is bad.No, no, no… When there is holy discontent—and it’s something wrong you need to correct, then go for it.But I’m talking about that killer of your joy—of just complaining about everything you have. You have to be real with God, yes?You have to be real with God when you are complaining. Let Him be the one to hear and solve your complaints. But don’t infect others with your complaining.Holy ComplainingYou see it actually in the Bible, in Psalms 1:42. It says:That’s holy complaining. Let Him hear you. What is the complaining that we see in Numbers? In Numbers, we see a chronic set of complaining and complainers fueled by a rebellious spirit and a lack of trust in God.You were already taken out of oppression and slavery, went through the Red Sea-- very miraculous—given with everything that you have, and after that pit stop, you’re going out three days after—you’re already complaining. Were those not yet enough--what the Lord did in your life to tell

Reading 1 Acts 28:16-20, 30-31 When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, "My brothers, although I had done nothing against our peopleor our ancestral customs,I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem. After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me,because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty. But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation. This is the reason, then, I have requested to see youand to speak with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israelthat I wear these chains." He remained for two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him, and with complete assuranceand without hindrance he proclaimed the Kingdom of Godand taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. Responsorial Psalm Ps 11:4, 5 and 7 R. (see 7b)  The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.or:R. Alleluia. The LORD is in his holy temple;the LORD's throne is in heaven. His eyes behold, his searching glance is on mankind.R. The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.or:R. Alleluia. The LORD searches the just and the wicked;the lover of violence he hates. For the LORD is just, he loves just deeds;the upright shall see his face.R. The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.or:R. Alleluia. Alleluia Jn 16:7, 13 R. Alleluia, alleluia.I will send to you the Spirit of truth, says the Lord;he will guide you to all truth.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Jn 21:20-25 Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supperand had said, "Master, who is the one who will betray you?"When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"Jesus said to him, "What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?  You follow me."So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die.But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just "What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?"It is this disciple who testifies to these thingsand has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. There are also many other things that Jesus did,but if these were to be described individually,I do not think the whole world would contain the booksthat would be written. Reading 1 Acts 20:17-27 From Miletus Paul had the presbytersof the Church at Ephesus summoned. When they came to him, he addressed them,"You know how I lived among youthe whole time from the day I first came to the province of Asia.I served the Lord with all humilityand with the tears and trials that came to mebecause of the plots of the Jews, and I did not at all shrink from telling youwhat was for your benefit,or from teaching you in public or in your homes.I earnestly bore witness for both Jews and Greeksto repentance before God and to faith in our Lord Jesus. But now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem. What will happen to me there I do not know, except that in one city after anotherthe Holy Spirit has been warning methat imprisonment and hardships await me.Yet I consider life of no importance to me,if only I may finish my courseand the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus,to bear witness to the Gospel of God's grace."But now I know that none of youto whom I preached the kingdom during my travelswill ever see my face again. And so I solemnly declare to you this daythat I am not responsible for the blood of any of you,for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God." Responsorial Psalm Ps 68:10-11, 20-21 R. (33a) Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.or:R. Alleluia.A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance;you restored the land when it languished;Your flock settled in it;in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy.R. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.or:R. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.or:R. Alleluia. Alleluia Jn 14:16 R. Alleluia, alleluia.I will ask the Fatherand he will give you another Advocateto be with you always.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Jn 17:1-11a Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said,"Father, the hour has come.Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people,so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him.Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God,and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.I glorified you on earthby accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began."I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me,and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you,and they have believed that you sent me.I pray for them.I

Wilderness: Talk 2 – Move when God moves, Stay when God stays

2023-05-20T02:40:06+08:00

Talk RYAN CAPITULO: TODAY we shall continue with our life-changing and wonderful talk series called Wilderness: Lessons and Inspiration from the Book of Numbers. For Talk 2, we will preach the message: Move When God Moves; Stay When God Stays. Please extend your hands to the Word of God and let us glorify His Word by singing: God’s Direction In Numbers 9: 17-18, we learn the nation of Israel would move and stay as directed by God Himself. That’s wonderful, right? Because I looked back at my life, and I realized that I did not allow God to direct me when I was younger. I would impose my will on God. So, when I was young, this was how I prayed: Lord, help me. I want to get into the best schools. Lord, help me. I want to be a doctor. I want to be an obstetrician-gynecologist. I want to be successful. That’s how I prayed. But you know, when I got older, and my relationship with God matured, He made me realize that I should be allowing Him to direct my life. Yes, that’s what God told me: I should allow Him to direct my life. And when I did that, He led me to become a teacher. And I am so happy being a medical educator. When I did that, He led me to be an advocate for the marginalized. When I did that, when I allowed God to direct my life, He led me to be a Builder here in The Feast. Please extend your hands once more and let us glorify the Lord: A Walk in the Wilderness Whenever I hear the word wilderness, my mind automatically goes to these pictures I took when I went to the Yosemite Park, California, in the United States. This wilderness is so beautiful. It is so breathtaking. And I was really so blessed to be there. But mind you, 3,000 years ago, wilderness meant death. Why Leave Mount Sinai? During the time of the Israelites, 3,000 years ago, wilderness meant wild animals, vicious bandits, dry land, famine, and starvation. Look at this dry land (above). That’s wilderness. During the time of the ancient Israelites, it meant starvation and death. I’m sure, there are many questions in your mind: Why did they have to leave Mount Sinai? It was already a good place to live in. Why did they have to move? Why did God ask the Israelites to pack everything up and walk again through the wilderness? Why Walk in the Wilderness Well, there are two reasons: Take note: God promised the Israelites a land filled with milk and honey. He did not promise Mount Sinai. So, God was teaching the Israelites: Do not hold on to Sinai. Do not hold on to your comfort zone because you have to reach the Promised Land. You know, sometimes, before we achieve the best, we have to go through some difficulties, right? We have to go through some challenges. So,

Wilderness: Talk 1 – God is with you in your wilderness

2023-05-13T15:02:09+08:00

Talk TODAY is very exciting. Because we are starting a brand-new series called Wilderness: Lessons and Inspiration from the book of Numbers. In this very first talk, we are preaching this message: God is with you in your wilderness. Even if we’re talking about the book of Numbers, I’d like to assure all of you, especially my niece, Alexa, who hates Math with a passion, I’m not talking about Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra, or Calculus. We are talking about the book of Numbers. So, please extend your hands to the Word of God, and let us glorify His Word by singing: Thy Word is a Lamp unto my feet And a Light unto my path. God’s Reminder We shall read from the very start of the book of Numbers— Chapter 1, Verses 1-2: God instructed Moses to conduct a census of Israel, His chosen people, because God wanted to remind them that He is fulfilling His promise to their father, Abraham. Remember, God told Abraham, “You will be the father of many nations and your descendants will be more numerous than the stars.” At that particular time (of the census), the Israelites were journeying in the wilderness and they were experiencing so many challenges. So, God had to remind them that He is a promise-keeper. So, let us glorify His Word once more: Thy Word is a Lamp unto my feet And a Light unto my path. Overview As I told you a while ago, we are talking about Numbers. But the question is: Because, as we read a while ago, God asked Moses to do the census—actually, twice in the entire book of Numbers. God asked Moses to conduct a census twice. So, Moses literally numbered the people. He literally numbered the Israelites he was journeying with. So, I’m sure, some of you might ask: “What is so inspiring about a book that would talk about census and numbering?” I’m sure some of you will ask if I know the names and the numbers of the warriors of Israel. I’m sure some of you will ask: “How will that strengthen my relationship with God? Why do I have to study this? I have so many concerns in my mind already. Why do I have to study the Statistics book of the Bible?” But I assure you, promise: After the end of the series, this Wilderness series, you will appreciate the treasures, the learnings, the blessings that can be derived from the book of Numbers. So, for this Talk 1, we will be giving you an overview of the entire book of Numbers, For  Talk  2,  which  will  cover Chapters 1-10, we will discuss the preparation of the Israelites as they were about to leave Mount Sinai. Then, for Talks 3-7, we will be discussing Chapters 13 to 19. And we will be reflecting on their journey in the wilderness of Paran (a desert in Western Arabia known today as Hijaz) And then, we will end this beautiful series with

Reading 1 Acts 13:44-52 On the following sabbathalmost the whole citygathered to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousyand with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said,"It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject itand condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life,we now turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us,I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvationto the ends of the earth."The Gentiles were delighted when they heard thisand glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, and the word of the Lord continued to spreadthrough the whole region. The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipersand the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against themand went to Iconium. The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. Responsorial Psalm Ps 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4 R. (3cd) All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.or:R. Alleluia.Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; His right hand has won victory for him,his holy arm.R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.or:R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.or:R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.or:R. Alleluia. Alleluia Jn 8:31b-32 R. Alleluia, alleluia. If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, says the Lord.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Jn 14:7-14 Jesus said to his disciples: "If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Philip said to Jesus, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a timeand you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in

The Garden: Talk 3 – Your Story is not over

2023-05-06T14:41:02+08:00

Talk Today, we’re going to do something a bit different. I know we have been walking around the different gardens in the Bible. But today, I thought it would be a prelude when we open the book of Numbers next week. I know we said that last week-- that we’re going to study a new book today. But we’re extending The Garden series just a bit. But instead of walking in the Garden, we’re going to take you back to the journey in the desert. We’re going to read a very special story in Joshua 11, starting from Verse 11, onwards. And I’m going to introduce to you a character in the Bible who’s going to bless you. It says here: Story of an Outcast Now, some context: The story in Joshua 2 is the part where God had actually promised the Israelites a land of their own. And on their way to that Promised Land, Jericho was the first city they would cross over. But the problem was that when the Israelites came to the exterior f Jericho, they saw that the city was fortified. It had high walls. And they weren’t equipped to defeat Jericho’s army. You know, the Israelites were just regular people. And so, what they knew was God promised something. But what do you do when you believe that God promised you something but then you hit a barrier so big? So that now, you’re questioning whether God’s promise was really true or not. The Israelites were in this position. This was also where they met this woman by the name of Rahab. Now, Rahab was a woman of shame. The Bible says she was a prostitute. Prostitution is not a 21st century invention. It’s one of the oldest occupations in history. At this moment, we’re going to find out that although Rahab was a citizen of Jericho, it would seem she was not part of Jericho. Because she would do something in the next verses. But first, I want to point out that somebody here may feel the same way Rahab felt… You might have the same surname as the people you’re living with under the same roof-- but you feel you’re an alien in that family. Because you might have a different set of beliefs, or a different set of priorities, different set of values… Or maybe, in that company that you joined, you feel like you’re an outcast because you don’t do the same things that other people do. I wonder if there’s anybody here who feels the same way as Rahab who belonged to the city of Jericho but she was somewhat removed-- because she didn’t feel like she belonged…Which makes the next verse quite interesting… This is how Rahab responded to these two spies who came into her home: Rahab’s Response Question: How many of you feel that there’s a sense of certainty in the voice of Rahab? This is her first time encountering the God of Israel. Rahab
