Reading 1 Ezr 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20 King Darius issued an order to the officials of West-of-Euphrates: "Let the governor and the elders of the Jews continue the work on that house of God; they are to rebuild it on its former site. I also issue this decree concerning your dealing with these elders of the Jews in the rebuilding of that house of God: From the royal revenue, the taxes of West-of-Euphrates, let these men be repaid for their expenses, in full and without delay. I, Darius, have issued this decree; let it be carefully executed." The elders of the Jews continued to make progress in the building, supported by the message of the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, son of Iddo. They finished the building according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus and Darius and of Artaxerxes, king of Persia. They completed this house on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. The children of Israel–priests, Levites, and the other returned exiles– celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy. For the dedication of this house of God, they offered one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, and four hundred lambs, together with twelve he-goats as a sin-offering for all Israel, in keeping with the number of the tribes of Israel. Finally, they set up the priests in their classes and the Levites in their divisions for the service of God in Jerusalem, as is prescribed in the book of Moses. The exiles kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. The Levites, every one of whom had purified himself for the occasion, sacrificed the Passover for the rest of the exiles, for their brethren the priests, and for themselves. Responsorial Psalm Ps 122:1-2, 3-4ab, 4cd-5 R. (1) Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.I rejoiced because they said to me,"We will go up to the house of the LORD."And now we have set footwithin your gates, O Jerusalem.R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.Jerusalem, built as a citywith compact unity. To it the tribes go up,the tribes of the LORD.R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.According to the decree for Israel,to give thanks to the name of the LORD.In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David.R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. Alleluia Lk 11:28 R. Alleluia, alleluia.Blessed are those who hear the word of Godand observe it.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Lk 8:19-21 The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to himbut were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outsideand they wish to see you."He said to them in reply, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it." Reading 1 1 Tm 6:2c-12 Beloved:Teach and urge these things.Whoever teaches something differentand does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christand the religious teachingis conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for arguments and verbal disputes. From these come envy, rivalry, insults, evil suspicions, and mutual friction among people with corrupted minds, who are deprived of the truth, supposing religion to be a means of gain.Indeed, religion with contentment is a great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, just as we shall not be able to take anything out of it.If we have food and clothing, we shall be content with that. Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trapand into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faithand have pierced themselves with many pains. But you, man of God, avoid all this.Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.Compete well for the faith.Lay hold of eternal life,to which you were called when you made the noble confessionin the presence of many witnesses. Responsorial Psalm Ps 49:6-7, 8-10, 17-18, 19-20 R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs! Why should I fear in evil dayswhen my wicked ensnarers ring me round? They trust in their wealth;the abundance of their riches is their boast.R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!Yet in no way can a man redeem himself,or pay his own ransom to God;Too high is the price to redeem one's life; he would never have enoughto remain alive always and not see destruction.R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!Fear not when a man grows rich, when the wealth of his house becomes great,For when he dies, he shall take none of it;his wealth shall not follow him down.R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs!Though in his lifetime he counted himself blessed,"They will praise you for doing well for yourself,"He shall join the circle of his forebearswho shall never more see light.R. Blessed the poor in spirit; the Kingdom of heaven is theirs! Alleluia See Mt 11:25 R. Alleluia, alleluia.Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Lk 8:1-3 Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.Accompanying him were the Twelveand some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities,Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza,Susanna, and many otherswho provided for them out of their resources. - - -Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States, second typical edition, Copyright © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; Psalm refrain © 1968, 1981, 1997, International Committee on English in the Liturgy, Inc. Reading 1 1 Tm 3:1-13 Beloved, this saying is trustworthy:whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task. Therefore, a bishop must be irreproachable, married only once, temperate, self-controlled,decent, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not aggressive, but gentle, not contentious, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, keeping his children under control with perfect dignity;for if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of the Church of God?He should not be a recent convert,so that he may not become conceitedand thus incur the Devil's punishment. He must also have a good reputation among outsiders,so that he may not fall into disgrace, the Devil's trap.Similarly, deacons must be dignified, not deceitful, not addicted to drink, not greedy for sordid gain, holding fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. Moreover, they should be tested first;then, if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.Women, similarly, should be dignified, not slanderers, but temperate and faithful in everything.Deacons may be married only onceand must manage their children and their households well. Thus those who serve well as deacons gain good standingand much confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus. Responsorial Psalm Ps 101:1b-2ab, 2cd-3ab, 5, 6 R.(2) I will walk with blameless heart.Of mercy and judgment I will sing;to you, O LORD, I will sing praise.I will persevere in the way of integrity;when will you come to me?R. I will walk with blameless heart.I will walk with blameless heart, within my house;I will not set before my eyesany base thing.R. I will walk with blameless heart.Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, him will I destroy. The man of haughty eyes and puffed up heartI will not endure.R. I will walk with blameless heart. My eyes are upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me.He who walks in the way of integrityshall be in my service.R. I will walk with blameless heart. Alleluia Lk 7:16 Lk 7:16 R. Alleluia, alleluia.A great prophet has arisen in our midstand God has visited his people.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Lk 7:11-17 Jesus journeyed to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, “Do not weep.” He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!” The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, exclaiming, “A great prophet has arisen in our midst,” and “God has visited his people.” This report about him spread through the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region. Reading 1 Sir 27:30—28:7 Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. The vengeful will suffer the LORD's vengeance, for he remembers their sins in detail.Forgive your neighbor's injustice;then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.Could anyone nourish anger against anotherand expect healing from the LORD?Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself, can he seek pardon for his own sins?If one who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins?Remember your last days, set enmity aside;remember death and decay, and cease from sin!Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor;remember the Most High's covenant, and overlook faults. Responsorial Psalm Ps 103:1-2, 3-4, 9-10, 11-12 R. (8) The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.Bless the LORD, O my soul;and all my being, bless his holy name.Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills.He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion.R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. He will not always chide, nor does he keep his wrath forever. Not according to our sins does he deal with us,nor does he requite us according to our crimes.R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. For as the heavens are high above the earth,so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.As far as the east is from the west,so far has he put our transgressions from us.R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. Reading 2 Rom 14:7-9 Brothers and sisters:None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord;so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's.For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Alleluia Jn 13:34 R. Alleluia, alleluia.I give you a new commandment, says the Lord;love one another as I have loved you.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 18:21-35 Peter approached Jesus and asked him,"Lord, if my brother sins against me,how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?" Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a kingwho decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting,a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property,in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.'Moved with compassion the master of that servantlet him go and forgave him the loan.
