Reading 1 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a At the mountain of God, Horeb,Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him,"Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD;the LORD will be passing by." A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountainsand crushing rocks before the LORD—but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake—but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire—but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this,Elijah hid his face in his cloakand went and stood at the entrance of the cave. Responsorial Psalm Ps 85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14 R. (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.I will hear what God proclaims;the LORD — for he proclaims peace.Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land.R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.Kindness and truth shall meet;justice and peace shall kiss.Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven.R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. The LORD himself will give his benefits;our land shall yield its increase.Justice shall walk before him,and prepare the way of his steps.R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. Reading 2 Rom 9:1-5 Brothers and sisters:I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie;my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witnessthat I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christfor the sake of my own people,my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites;theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen. Alleluia Cf. Ps 130:5 R. Alleluia, alleluia.I wait for the Lord;my soul waits for his word.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 14:22-33 After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boatand precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night,he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter said to him in reply,"Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began

The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God,with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today.Drill them into your children.Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest.Bind them at your wrist as a signand let them be as a pendant on your forehead.Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates."When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which he sworeto your fathers: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that he would give you,a land with fine, large cities that you did not build, with houses full of goods of all sorts that you did not garner, with cisterns that you did not dig, with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant;and when, therefore, you eat your fill, take care not to forget the LORD,who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. The LORD, your God, shall you fear;him shall you serve, and by his name shall you swear." Alleluia See 2 Tm 1:10 R. Alleluia, alleluia. Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed deathand brought life to light through the Gospel.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 17:14-20 A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, and said,"Lord, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic and suffers severely;often he falls into fire, and often into water.I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him."Jesus said in reply,"O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you?How long will I endure you? Bring the boy here to me."Jesus rebuked him and the demon came out of him,and from that hour the boy was cured. Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said,"Why could we not drive it out?"He said to them, "Because of your little faith.Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain,'Move from here to there,' and it will move.Nothing will be impossible for you." Readings for the Memorial of Saint Clare, virginReading 1 Dt 4:32-40 Moses said to the people:"Ask now of the days of old, before your time, ever since God created man upon the earth;ask from one end of the sky to the other:Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of? Did a people ever hear the voice of Godspeaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live?Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himselffrom the midst of another nation,by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, with his strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors, all of which the LORD, your God,did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? All this you were allowed to see that you might know the LORD is God and there is no other.Out of the heavens he let you hear his voice to discipline you;on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard him speaking out of the fire. For love of your fathers he chose their descendantsand personally led you out of Egypt by his great power, driving out of your way nations greater and mightier than you,so as to bring you inand to make their land your heritage, as it is today. This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and that there is no other. You must keep his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the landwhich the LORD, your God, is giving you forever." Responsorial Psalm Ps 77:12-13, 14-15, 16 and 21 R. (12a) I remember the deeds of the Lord.I remember the deeds of the LORD;yes, I remember your wonders of old. And I meditate on your works;your exploits I ponder.R. I remember the deeds of the Lord.O God, your way is holy;what great god is there like our God?You are the God who works wonders;among the peoples you have made known your power.R. I remember the deeds of the Lord. With your strong arm you redeemed your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. You led your people like a flockunder the care of Moses and Aaron.R. I remember the deeds of the Lord. Alleluia Mt 5:10 R. Alleluia, alleluia.Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness;for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 16:24-28 Jesus said to his disciples,"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.What profit would there be for one to gain the whole worldand forfeit his life?Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's glory, and then he will repay each according to his conduct.Amen, I say to you, there are some standing

Reading 1 Nm 11:4b-15 The children of Israel lamented,"Would that we had meat for food!We remember the fish we used to eat without cost in Egypt, and the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now we are famished;we see nothing before us but this manna."Manna was like coriander seed and had the color of resin. When they had gone about and gathered it up,the people would grind it between millstones or pound it in a mortar, then cook it in a pot and make it into loaves, which tasted like cakes made with oil.At night, when the dew fell upon the camp, the manna also fell. When Moses heard the people, family after family, crying at the entrance of their tents,so that the LORD became very angry, he was grieved."Why do you treat your servant so badly?" Moses asked the LORD."Why are you so displeased with methat you burden me with all this people? Was it I who conceived all this people? Or was it I who gave them birth, that you tell me to carry them at my bosom, like a foster father carrying an infant,to the land you have promised under oath to their fathers?Where can I get meat to give to all this people? For they are crying to me,'Give us meat for our food.'I cannot carry all this people by myself, for they are too heavy for me.If this is the way you will deal with me,then please do me the favor of killing me at once,so that I need no longer face this distress." Responsorial Psalm Ps 81:12-13, 14-15, 16-17 R. (2a) Sing with joy to God our help."My people heard not my voice, and Israel obeyed me not;So I gave them up to the hardness of their hearts;they walked according to their own counsels."R. Sing with joy to God our help."If only my people would hear me,and Israel walk in my ways,Quickly would I humble their enemies;against their foes I would turn my hand."R. Sing with joy to God our help."Those who hated the LORD would seek to flatter me,but their fate would endure forever,While Israel I would feed with the best of wheat, and with honey from the rock I would fill them."R. Sing with joy to God our help. Alleluia Mt 4:4 R. Alleluia, alleluia. One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 14:13-21 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist,he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said,"This is a deserted place and it is already late;dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villagesand buy food for themselves."He said to them, "There is no need for them to go away;give them some food yourselves."But they said to him,"Five loaves

Reading 1 Dn 7:9-10, 13-14 As I watched:Thrones were set upand the Ancient One took his throne. His clothing was bright as snow, and the hair on his head as white as wool;his throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire.A surging stream of fireflowed out from where he sat;Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him,and myriads upon myriads attended him.The court was convened and the books were opened. As the visions during the night continued, I saw:One like a Son of man coming,on the clouds of heaven; When he reached the Ancient Oneand was presented before him,The one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship;all peoples, nations, and languages serve him.His dominion is an everlasting dominionthat shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed. Responsorial Psalm Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 9 R. (1a and 9a) The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth. The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice;let the many islands be glad.Clouds and darkness are round about him, justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne.R. The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth. The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,before the LORD of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory.R. The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth.Because you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth, exalted far above all gods. R. The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth. Reading 2 2 Pt 1:16-19 Beloved:We did not follow cleverly devised mythswhen we made known to youthe power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Fatherwhen that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory,"This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased."We ourselves heard this voice come from heavenwhile we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it,as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Alleluia Mt 17:5c R. Alleluia, alleluia. This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;listen to him.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 17:1-9 Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here.If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."While he was still speaking, behold,a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;listen to him."When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrateand were very much

Readings for the Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, priestReading 1 Ex 32:15-24, 30-34 Moses turned and came down the mountainwith the two tablets of the commandments in his hands, tablets that were written on both sides, front and back;tablets that were made by God,having inscriptions on them that were engraved by God himself. Now, when Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting,he said to Moses, "That sounds like a battle in the camp."But Moses answered, "It does not sound like cries of victory, nor does it sound like cries of defeat;the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry."As he drew near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. With that, Moses' wrath flared up, so that he threw the tablets downand broke them on the base of the mountain.Taking the calf they had made, he fused it in the fireand then ground it down to powder, which he scattered on the water and made the children of Israel drink.Moses asked Aaron, "What did this people ever do to youthat you should lead them into so grave a sin?"Aaron replied, "Let not my lord be angry. You know well enough how prone the people are to evil. They said to me, 'Make us a god to be our leader;as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt,we do not know what has happened to him.'So I told them, 'Let anyone who has gold jewelry take it off.'They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out."On the next day Moses said to the people,"You have committed a grave sin.I will go up to the LORD, then;perhaps I may be able to make atonement for your sin."So Moses went back to the LORD and said,"Ah, this people has indeed committed a grave sinin making a god of gold for themselves! If you would only forgive their sin!If you will not, then strike me out of the book that you have written."The LORD answered, "Him only who has sinned against mewill I strike out of my book. Now, go and lead the people to the place I have told you.My angel will go before you. When it is time for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin." Reading I Ex 20:1-17 In those days: God delivered all these commandments:     “I, the LORD, am your God,      who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves      in the shape of anything in the sky above      or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;      you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God,      inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness      on the children of those who hate me,      down to the third and fourth generation;      but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation      on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished      him who takes his name in vain. “Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. Six days you may labor and do all your work,      but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter,      or your male or female slave, or your beast,      or by the alien who lives with you. In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth,      the sea and all that is in them;      but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. “Honor your father and your mother,      that you may have a long life in the land      which the LORD, your God, is giving you. “You shall not kill. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife,      nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass,      nor anything else that belongs to him.” Responsorial Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11 R.    (John 6:68c)  Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The law of the LORD is perfect,     refreshing the soul; The decree of the LORD is trustworthy,     giving wisdom to the simple. R.    Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The precepts of the LORD are right,     rejoicing the heart; The command of the LORD is clear,     enlightening the eye. R.    Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The fear of the LORD is pure,     enduring forever; The ordinances of the LORD are true,     all of them just. R.    Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. They are more precious than gold,     than a heap of purest gold; Sweeter also than syrup     or honey from the comb. R.    Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. Alleluia See Lk

Reading 1 Ex 11:10—12:14 Although Moses and Aaron performed various wondersin Pharaoh's presence, the LORD made Pharaoh obstinate, and he would not let the children of Israel leave his land. The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,"This month shall stand at the head of your calendar;you shall reckon it the first month of the year.Tell the whole community of Israel: On the tenth of this monthevery one of your families must procure for itself a lamb, one apiece for each household. If a family is too small for a whole lamb,it shall join the nearest household in procuring oneand shall share in the lambin proportion to the number of persons who partake of it.The lamb must be a year-old male and without blemish. You may take it from either the sheep or the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and then, with the whole assembly of Israel present,it shall be slaughtered during the evening twilight. They shall take some of its bloodand apply it to the two doorposts and the lintelof every house in which they partake of the lamb. That same night they shall eat its roasted fleshwith unleavened bread and bitter herbs. It shall not be eaten raw or boiled, but roasted whole, with its head and shanks and inner organs.None of it must be kept beyond the next morning;whatever is left over in the morning shall be burned up."This is how you are to eat it: with your loins girt, sandals on your feet and your staff in hand, you shall eat like those who are in flight. It is the Passover of the LORD.For on this same night I will go through Egypt, striking down every first born of the land, both man and beast, and executing judgment on all the gods of Egypt—I, the LORD!But the blood will mark the houses where you are.Seeing the blood, I will pass over you;thus, when I strike the land of Egypt,no destructive blow will come upon you."This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebratewith pilgrimage to the LORD, as a perpetual institution." Responsorial Psalm Ps 116:12-13, 15 and 16bc, 17-18 R.
